What is the process for applying to the Patient Care Technician program?
If you are not yet a student at Greenville Tech, you will need to submit an application to the college and take the placement test. Placement testing may not be necessary if you have previous college credits. You may apply online, or you could apply in person at the (ARC) Admissions and Registration Center (McAlister Square on Pleasantburg Drive) or at any branch campus. The testing center is located in the ARC, and you may test at any branch campus.
You must be 18 years of age and have already earned your high school diploma or completed your GED. If you are a new student, the following minimum test scores are required for admission into the PCT program: COMPASS – reading (67) & math (35); ASSET – reading (37) & math (33). Either test is acceptable. COMPASS is untimed and taken on a computer, while ASSET is timed and traditional. (ASSET is available only at the ARC.)
If you are a current student, you need to have completed MAT 031 and RDG 032 (or higher) to enter the PCT program. Alternately, your placement test scores must meet the above minimum requirements and be less than 3 years old.
Who do I contact to register?
After these steps, you need to make an appointment/reservation with Nita Chambers (250-8132) for the Barton Campus (main campus, South Pleasantburg), Jim White (250-3610) for the Northwest Campus (Berea/Travelers Rest), or Jackie Williams (250-7964) for the Brashier (Simpsonville) Campus to register for classes either to upgrade your math and/or reading, or to enroll in the PCT courses if all requirements are met. Students may not self-register for PCT courses. You will need to pay a $100 deposit at the business office prior to registering for the PCT program. You will also be required to attend a mandatory PCT orientation meeting prior to beginning the PCT program.
How many credit hours is the PCT program?

Does the PCT program prepare me to take the CNA exam?

Is CPR required?
Yes. Two-year CPR must be Health Care Provider Adult/Child/Infant. Only courses titled “CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider” by the American Red Cross or “Health Care Provider” by the American Heart Association is accepted.
Are there any specific health requirements for Nursing?
Your advisor will share this information with you and it will be discussed during the mandatory orientation meeting. A physical by a doctor or nurse practitioner is required and must be provided with proof of immunity to certain communicable diseases and a two-step PPD (TB test). The student is responsible for the cost of the physical, updated immunization records, and CPR.
Are Drug Screening and Criminal Background Checks required for Patient Care Technician students?
PCT students are required to pre-clear a criminal background check and pass (negative results) a 10-panel drug screen prior to the start of clinicals; the costs are included in tuition and fees. Students must have a clear background check for seven years and no history of violent crimes on their criminal background check. The college will be responsible for conducting the CBC and drug screen.
How do I apply for Financial Aid?
Financial aid is not available for the PCT program. PCT is a 10 credit hour certificate program, and regular financial aid is available for programs that are at least 16 credit hours. However, if you choose, for example, the ADN program (nursing associate degree, related to PCT) as your major, financial aid would probably, in general, be available for the PCT certificate courses. If one does not qualify for regular financial aid, one may be eligible for SC lottery tuition assistance. You will need to apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), preferably online.
