Melissa Black, 2006 Outstanding Alumna
of the Year
Melissa Black of Greer began her college career at Furman University with a major in pre-med/biology, transferred to Clemson University changing majors several times, and found her future at Greenville Tech.
After a break from her studies following a serious car accident, Black’s grandmother told her to think about becoming a nurse, something she had never considered. No one in high school had suggested a career in nursing for a good student, and Black thought her only options were becoming a teacher, lawyer, doctor, or engineer. She recalls that when she took her first nursing class at Tech she was hooked for life and had finally found her niche!
She graduated from Greenville Tech in 1995, received her Bachelor’s of Nursing from Gardner-Webb University, a Master’s in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a post-graduate certificate in Nursing Education from Clemson University, and plans on starting her Ph.D. in Public Health this fall. Black taught clinical nursing students at Clemson University and accepted a full-time faculty position at Greenville Tech in 2004.
Melissa has been very active in the Upstate by organizing and helping with health fairs within the African-American community; serving on the Minority Council for the Blood Connection and the Greenville Human Rights Committee; and assisting with the Health Care Ministry at Reedy River Missionary Baptist Church in Mauldin. |
