Bob Coleman, 2007 Honorary Alumnus of the Year

Born in 1925 and raised in Greenville County, Bob Coleman graduated Greenville High School in 1942 and joined the Marine Corps Reserves.  He left active duty with the Marines in 1946 although he says that “once a Marine…always a Marine.”  He then attended Limestone College in Gaffney for one year and continued his education at North Carolina State and earned a degree in Engineering in 1950.

Bob Coleman worked in several textile plants and joined Regal Textiles in 1955.  After moving to New York City and becoming Chairman of Regal Textile, the main office came back to Greenville and he retired here in 1982.

When he was not serving on a variety of bank and community service boards and earning six Honorary degrees, Bob became Chairman of the Board and the Foundation of the Greenville Hospital System.  He understood the need to work with Greenville Tech to provide training for students to become future hospital employees.  This effort turned into a long and strong friendship with the President of Greenville Tech, Tom Barton and with Greenville Technical College.  He considers Dr. Barton to not only be a dear friend but as one of the greatest assets and most outstanding men of our community and state.

When not spending time with his friends and helping to improve our community, Bob enjoys being with his loving wife, Jane William Coleman, and their three grown children, Deborah, Beth, and Rob and grandchildren

Although he did not graduate from Greenville Tech, Bob Coleman has provided outstanding service and made significant contributions to the college.  He has been a member of the Greenville Tech Foundation Board of Directors beginning in 1988, served as Board President from 1991-1992 and became a life member in 1997.  He co-chaired The Foundation’s “Partners Working for Success” fundraising campaign from 1997-2004 that raised $17.4 million surpassing a goal of $9.3 million.  He has been a donor to the Foundation that places him in the Thomas E. Barton Society of those who have given over $100,000 over their life-time to support Greenville Tech.

the Greenville Tech Alumni Association recognizes all of Bob’s personal support and endeavors on behalf of Greenville Tech and our community, past, present and future.
