Business Office - Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the $35.00 application fee not print on my registration statement?

The $35.00 application fee is a required fee which is supposed to be paid with your

application before you register.  It is not part of tuition, and it will not display on your account or registration statement.  Staff might override the fee to make your registration go quickly, but the unpaid fee will hold up grades, transcripts, and further registration.

How much is tuition?

What do I do to get Pell and other financial aid such as lottery?

- Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and follow the link to apply for a personal Identification   Number (PIN).  Once you have the PIN, apply on www.fafsa.ed.gov for the   2007- 2008 school year with the family’s 2006 taxes.  Have a copy of the Student   Aid Report (SAR) sent to federal college code 003991.

- To get Stafford loans, there are three additional steps, and you will use the PIN   for them all.

     - While on fafsa.ed.gov, check off “yes” to loans.

     - Go to www.mapping-your-future.org and complete Stafford entrance loan        counseling.

     - Go to www.slc.sc.edu and sign the master promissory note (MPN) to accept         the loan.

- Apply for financial aid immediately, as soon as your taxes are done.  The federal   deadline is June 30, but GTC does not honor the deadline, so you can still get   reimbursed after aid arrives.  You can apply for aid a year in advance.

How does lottery work?

- SC Lottery Tuition Assistance will pay up to $75.00 per hour of tuition not covered   by needs-based grants such as Pell.  There is a 6-credit-hour minimum.  Lottery   does NOT pay for everything.  To get lottery funds, you must have a complete and   verified Student Aid Report on file.  There is nothing additional to be done.  State   Grants such as SC Needs-Based Grant or Lottery “piggyback” off the federal   Student Aid Report (SAR).

- If you do not have a completed and verified SAR on file with the GTC Financial Aid   office, with probation or satisfactory standing, then you do not have any kind of   aid.

What happens if I withdraw from classes?

- If you receive any federal aid and withdraw, you will have to pay a prorated   amount of federal funds back immediately.  Aid is awarded on the assumption that   you complete the classes the Title IV funds paid you to take.

- For “Satisfactory Academic Progress”, you must complete 2/3 of all attempted   credit hours and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

- All forms of financial aid except Pell Grant require a six-credit hour minimum.

What is the “purge”, and will it affect me?

- Students with any balance due will be deleted from all classes.  Three things can   protect you from the purge.

        - A completed financial aid file.  If you have a completed file, regardless of           eligibility, you will NOT be purged.

        - A “Do Not Purge” (DNP) payment plan.  [Additional fees will apply.]

        - Full payment of all charges. [No additional fees needed.]

- If you have a balance due, and do not have one of the items listed, then you will   be purged from everything.

- Most GTC students do have a financial aid file and will not be purged.  Therefore, if   there is any class that you do not wish to be registered and charged for, you must   officially drop it before it starts.

- Even the smallest step could leave your Financial Aid file incomplete, so do not   assume you are safe from the purge.

- Go to the CampusCruiser WebAdvisor and check your purge status under “My   Class Schedule”.

What is a Do Not Purge?

The ”DNP” is a payment plan with a single payoff date.  It is called the “Do Not Purge” plan because it protects your schedule from the purge.  You can break the balance due up into any kind of payments you want, as long as you get it paid-in-full before the due date.  There is a $30.00 non-refundable loan set-up fee.  The plan strongly encourages you to apply for aid.  It is a good idea to start immediately making partial payments, so that you do not have to come up with a lump-sum by the payoff date.  You will be charged late fees and interest if you go past due.

What if I register for class but choose not to come?

- When you register for a class, you are purchasing that class seat.  If you do not   officially drop the class, then you will be charged for that class seat, regardless of   whether you attend.  Late fees and interest will also apply.

- YOU SHOULD OFFICIALLY DROP THE CLASS BY THE START DATE TO GUARANTEE   THAT YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED.

What happens if I have a balance and do not pay?

Students with a balance cannot receive transcripts, grades, deferments, or register.  Multiple laws grant merchants the right to pursue debt with interest.  We charge 18% APR, compounded daily.  Debts eventually transfer to the SC Department of Revenue for tax and wage garnishments.  If it goes to the DOR, they will charge an additional 28%.  The state is the original debt holder and is not subject to do-not-call lists and FDCA restrictions.  If you are making frequent payments, then you are showing an “intent to pay”, and the debt will not go on your credit.

How is Greenville Technical College accredited?

We are accredited by SACS, the same regional accreditation group that Furman,     Auburn, Clemson, USC, Georgia Tech, and Florida State depend on.
