Greenville County’s Newest High School Prepares to Open

Greer Middle College is preparing for an August 12, 2008 opening. The school, which currently has 60 students enrolled, is continuing to take applications, found on the school’s website at www.greermiddlecollege.org or by calling 250-8844. At capacity, the school can accommodate a freshman class of 100 students.

The school’s principal, Jean B. Williams, comes to South Carolina from California, where she has recently been honored as the 2007 Santa Ana Unified School District Administrator of the Year. Principal of Middle College High School at Santa Ana College in Orange County, California, she has 29 years of experience in education at both the elementary and secondary levels. Williams, a South Carolina native, spent her spring break in the Upstate, filling faculty and staff positions, leaving all but one teaching position filled.

Greer Middle College will be located in a new building on Greenville Tech’s Greer Campus by 2009, allowing sophomores, juniors and seniors to take college classes for dual credit while in high school. A small, public charter high school of 400 students, Greer Middle College will offer personalized learning and support for students.

With the Greer Campus at capacity, Greer Middle College is seeking an alternative site for its first year of operation. One possible site is Taylor’s First Baptist Church, an idea the school’s Facility Committee is investigating.

The school will feature project-based learning, instruction at a mastery level of 80 percent, required academic assistance for scores below that level, required parental involvement, and tuition free college credit beginning at the 10th grade level, while adhering to South Carolina state standards for high school curriculum and state diploma. Greer Middle College will be a member of the Middle College National Consortium and the High School Initiative, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
