Avemco™ and Build a Plane land Greenville Tech new equipment

A salvaged Cessna 310 is no longer able to fly but still provides students with an opportunity for hands-on learning. Avemco Insurance Company recently worked with the Build A Plane program to donate a salvaged Cessna 310 to Greenville Tech’s Aircraft Maintenance Technology. After hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, Avemco worked with Build A Plane to transfer and transport over 20 totaled airplanes recovered from the storms’ damage to schools that wanted restoration projects.

“Thanks to Avemco and Build A Plane, we are able to offer students real world aircraft to work on, perfecting their hands-on skills in aircraft maintenance,” said Carl Washburn, Department Head for Aircraft Maintenance Technology at Greenville Tech.

The Aircraft Maintenance training program offered by Greenville Technical College is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Veterans Administration and provides students with the technical, mechanical and academic skills required to become aircraft maintenance technicians. Graduates are qualified to take the FAA Airframe and Powerplant Technician Certification exams.

Build A Plane is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting aviation and aerospace careers by giving young people the opportunity to build real airplanes. The organization focuses on facilitating aircraft donations from owners to schools requesting airplane construction and restoration projects that help teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Avemco Insurance Company, a leading pleasure and business general aviation insurer in the United States, has been insuring planes and pilots since 1961. Headquartered in Frederick, Maryland, Avemco is rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best Company and AA (Very Strong) by Standard & Poor’s. Avemco is a subsidiary of HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc., a leading international specialty insurance group with assets of nearly $8.1 billion.
