Nearly $2 million in Title III funds will help Greenville Tech reform and restructure

Greenville Technical College is one of approximately 63 two-year and four-year colleges nationwide to receive a Strengthening Institutions (Title III) award from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education. The $1,941,497 award will extend over a five-year period, with an average of $388,222 received each year. Announcement of the award was made by Sen. Jim DeMint on July 3.

Greenville Tech’s grant proposal, entitled “Reform and Restructure,” detailed the college’s plan to improve preparedness and success of students. In component one of the plan, college personnel will redesign development courses, which prepare students to take on college-level work, and develop a new college readiness course targeted to all developmental students. In a second component, a learning commons lab will be created, where students can spend additional time on assignments. The college’s enrollment software system, Datatel, will be enhanced to provide intervention services including early alerts to at-risk students, an assessment tool for faculty, and comprehensive monitoring and tracking of students from enrollment to graduation. Undergirding both components will be a comprehensive professional development program comprised of an annual on-campus faculty institute, faculty-led learning circles, conference participation, and online resources. Dr. Suresh Tiwari, dean of the college’s Arts and Sciences Division, is the project director.

A Title III Planning Grant in 2004-2005 from the U.S. Department of Education in the amount of $34,825 helped pave the way for the funded proposal.
