Perkins Funds support purchase of additional patient simulator
(GREENVILLE, SC) -- Using funds from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006, Greenville Tech’s Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) department has purchased a Human Patient Simulator.
This purchase brings the total number of simulators in use at Greenville Tech to 14. These teaching tools have been used since 2002 in the college’s nursing, respiratory therapy and EMT programs. The sophisticated computerized simulators are programmed to have medical conditions. They respond to procedures, broadening the range of conditions from which students can draw hands-on experience.
Eleven of the simulators, including a pediatric model, mimic the physiology a real patient. The other two have advanced airway and cardiac capabilities.
The simulator purchased this year with Perkins funds is a very portable model. Called the iStan, this simulator delivers realism, clinical features, and flexibility. The iStan closely mimics the anatomical workings of the human body with accurate spine, arms, neck and hips. The simulator is wireless and battery operated for portability and versatility.
Mike Fisher, Greenville Tech’s Department Head for Emergency Medical Technology, was recently named the college’s Simulation Director for all four campuses, due to the increasing role that simulators play in educating students in the health care programs.
