Greenville Tech Welding Department receives $250,000 AdvanceSC grant award
(GREENVILLE, SC) – The Welding Department at Greenville Technical College has received a $250,000 AdvanceSC grant award.
The money will be used for critical expansion of equipment resources, adding 31 new welding stations. In addition, funds will be used for professional development and new certifications for welding instructors, and development of curriculum that incorporates advanced welding technologies and meets global nuclear pipe welding standards.
“Receiving this grant money was wonderful news,” said Jack Wilson, Greenville Tech’s Department Head for Welding. “This will enable us to replace aging welding machines, iron man equipment, and other equipment, some of which is 20 years old, with state-of-the-art equipment to prepare students for employment in local fabrication shops or pipe welding positions with large construction companies.”
Wilson hopes that, with the growth of nuclear welding, instructors can receive training in welding procedures and codes to keep skills and knowledge up-to-date with the power plants and nuclear job site standards.
AdvanceSC is a limited liability company established by Duke Energy to support economic growth and public assistance agencies in the company’s service area.
