AWS section awards scholarship to Greenville Tech student
The American Welding Society’s Western Carolina Section 195 has awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Phillip Warda, a student in the Welding program at Greenville Tech.
Warda was selected for the scholarship, to be used strictly for education, based on interest in the career, need, and academic standing. Graduating Summer 2008, Warda hopes to pursue a career in nuclear pipe welding.
“It’s nice having piece of mind knowing that my financial situation is taken care of,” Warda said. “I can focus more on school and not worry about how many hours a week I’m working.”
The Western Carolina Section raises scholarship funds through an annual golf tournament, a calendar fundraiser, and a career night for local vocational center students. In addition, the group receives funds from the American Welding Society, a worldwide organization.
The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a mission to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes including brazing, soldering, and thermal spraying. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, AWS is supported by a staff of more than 100 professionals and serves more than 50,000 members worldwide.
