Among the strongest opportunities in manufacturing are the machinist positions. In fact, in 2004, there were 370,000 of these jobs, averaging $16.33 an hour, and upward of $70,000 for graduates of associate degree programs.
Machinists use lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and other machine tools to produce precision metal parts. The work in small machining shops and in large manufacturing firms that produce durable goods such as metalworking and industrial machinery, aircraft, and motor vehicles.
Though training has traditionally taken place on the job, in high schools, and in vocational schools, a growing trend is to earn an associate degree or join an apprentice program. Greenville Tech is recognized by Upstate companies as the hiring source for skilled metalworking professionals. The college’s Machine Tool Technology program meets the academic requirements of Drive Automotive, Bausch Rexroth, and National Tooling Association, all of which are BAT approved.

The Machine Tool Technology program is designed to provide local companies with a pool of skilled Metal Working personnel and to provide training in the metal working field for local companies.
