Massage Therapy
The college that works for those who want to take a hands-on approach.
Health care is moving from a field devoted to treatment and focusing more on prevention. Skilled massage therapists can help clients deal with injuries, stress and a host of other problems, as well as promote well being. Respect for the profession is growing, and today many hospitals, physicians and chiropractors are recognizing the benefits of therapeutic massage.
In order to obtain a license in South Carolina, massage therapists must pass a certification examination before becoming licensed to practice. South Carolina requires a minimum of 500 hours of classroom training to become eligible to take the NCE or MBLex exam.
Greenville Tech’s program, with 750 classroom and clinical hours led by experienced professionals, will prepare students for the exam. This preparation will include an understanding of how the structural, physiological and emotional components of the body are affected by massage, as well as the legal, financial and ethical aspects of the profession. Because massage is a healing art as well as a science, a successful student will be able to balance technical knowledge, clinical skills, sensitivity and awareness.
The program builds on a foundation of an in-depth study of Swedish massage techniques, and includes instruction on sports massage, sports injury and deep tissue, neuromusculature, and many other techniques. Course work is based on college-level anatomy and physiology. Each student is required to participate in
clinics offered to the public.
Students may select from three program options at Greenville Tech’s Greer Campus: a full-time, two-term day track; an evening/weekend track consisting of three terms; or an evening track consisting of four terms. All options include the same required courses, although the sequencing may be different. Our Northwest Campus offers a part-time, three-track day program which begins in the spring, and a part-time, four-track evening program which begins in the fall.
Prior to acceptance into the program students must attend a Career Talk session.
A career as a massage therapist is physically challenging, yet also very rewarding because many clients often experience immediate results. Employment opportunities range from a doctor’s office to a cruise ship to private practice. A therapist who continues to learn the latest techniques, uses discretion and upholds high standards can build a financially successful and personally gratifying practice.
The Massage Therapy program offers a clinic at Greenville Tech’s Greer Campus which accepts appointments from the general public. To schedule a day, evening or weekend appointment, please call (864) 848-2974. For a one-hour therapeutic massage, the cost is $20 ($10 for senior citizens, Greenville Tech students, faculty, and staff.
