The practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the clinical laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a vital part of the team which performs a full range of tests in areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Blood Banking. The test results are used to diagnose diseases such as diabetes, AIDS, cancer and blood disorders. The MLT is also responsible for confirming the accuracy of the tests. Over 70% of medical decisions made by physicians are based on information obtained from lab tests.

MLTs use instruments including microscopes and automated analyzers to perform their daily tasks. They must be dedicated, self-motivated, accurate, reliable, and interested in science and math.

Employment opportunities are available in hospitals, physician’s offices, medical research facilities, industrial laboratories and government agencies. Due to changes occurring in health care, there is a bright outlook for employment for the Greenville Tech MLT graduate. Currently, there is a nationwide shortage of medical laboratory professionals which is expected to increase salaries and other benefits, such as relocation bonuses and educational assistance.
