Want to change gears quickly?  Our nine-week Truck Driver Training certificate can help you get a job or a better job quickly.  Truck drivers and driver/sales workers held over 3 million jobs in 2004, and the job outlook is favorable with good salaries predicted.  Learn the basics of long haul, short haul and local operations plus new technologies including satellites and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that impact truck drivers.

Truck Driver stands by a truckThe Job
Truck drivers deliver everything from automobiles to canned foods. Firms of all types rely on trucks for pickup and delivery of goods since no other form of transportation can
deliver goods door to door.  New technologies are impacting the job, especially for long-distance truck drivers. Satellites and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) link many trucks with company headquarters.  Drivers can receive troubleshooting information, directions, weather reports and other important information in the truck. The dispatcher can track the truck’s location, fuel consumption, and engine performance.

The Salaries
Jobs vary greatly in terms of earnings, with median hourly earnings of heavy truck and tractor- trailer drivers being $16.11 in 2004.

Truck Drivers discuss covenantThe Education
State and federal regulations govern the qualifications and standards for truck drivers. Drivers of trucks designed to carry 26,000 pounds or more must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) from the state of residence. To qualify for a CDL, applicants must pass a written test and demonstrate safe operation of a commercial truck.

Program
This program, offered at the Donaldson Center, trains truck drivers in long haul, short haul and local operations, basics for over-the-road travel, and the rules and regulations of the Department of Transportation.
