BRIDGE PROGRAM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Bridge Program?

Greenville Tech’s Bridge Programs offer students a new avenue for transferring to selected four-year colleges or universities. If you would like to pursue an undergraduate degree at one of the colleges with which we have a Bridge Program Agreement, you can be assured of a seamless transition as a sophomore after spending your freshman year (successfully completing no more than one year and 30 credit hours of transfer credit) at Greenville Tech.

Which colleges partner with Greenville Tech in a Bridge Program?

We currently have agreements with the University of South Carolina, USC Upstate, the College of Charleston and Francis Marion University. Because Bridge Programs provide such good opportunities for qualified students; we are currently working to expand the number of colleges in the state that participate with us in a Bridge Program, so check back for updates!

How can I become part of one of Greenville Tech’s Bridge programs?

Bridge Program students are invited to participate by the four-year college to which they have applied and been denied admission. These letters are mailed in early spring.

What are some benefits of becoming a Bridge Program student?

Bridge Program students are part of a community within Greenville Tech. Those who choose to live in student housing may choose a roommate who will transfer to the same Bridge Program destination college. Also, Bridge Program students are given priority admission to their declared four-year college as a sophomore, provided they continue to meet academic requirements. They also are part of the student body of their destination school and are eligible for many of the benefits. While at Greenville Tech, Bridge Program Students pay our tuition and fees and will be eligible for the Financial Aid tuition assistance if qualified, including Lottery finds.

What are the requirements for becoming part of a Bridge Program?

The requirements may vary somewhat depending on your destination college, but typically they include:

1. receiving a letter of invitation from a Bridge Program college
2. attending an orientation session @ GTC
3. meeting minimum GPA requirements for declared major at the Bridge Program     college which is the transfer destination

How can I be sure that Greenville Tech credit hours will transfer?

A major benefit for Bridge Program students is advance advising to ensure all credit hours earned at Greenville Tech transfer, so an academic roadmap is an essential and important part of the process.

If my test scores indicate a need for developmental courses, will these credit hours be part of my 30 transfer hours?

No. Developmental credit hours are not transferable, so students whose test scores place them one or more developmental courses are encouraged to attend summer school at Greenville Tech so that they will be prepared to enroll in University Transfer courses in the Fall Semester. Credit hours earned at Greenville Tech in developmental courses count toward the allowed maximum earned credit hours for Bridge Program students.

Will AP/IB credits or dual enrollment credits count toward the 30-hour requirement?

No.  However, those credits may transfer to the Bridge Program destination college.

If I am eligible to receive the LIFE scholarship at another 4-year SC university, will I receive the full amount as a student in the Bridge Program?

The LIFE scholarship covers the amount of full-time tuition and provides an annual $300 book allowance to eligible students who attend Greenville Tech.  LIFE funds may not be applied to housing.  In addition, there may be other Bridge Program costs that are not covered by Life Scholarship funds. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss all options with their advisor or Financial Aid representative.

What do my Greenville Tech placement test scores mean?

Math, reading and writing placement tests assess a student’s readiness for college level course work.  When students place into developmental courses, they must take those classes before enrolling in a transferable course. NOTE: Once a student completes the placement test, an advisor will discuss the results with the student and make course recommendations. To practice for the placement test, go to http://act.org/compass/sample/index.html.
