There are many places where you can learn about the beauty industry, but there are few that train you to succeed in top salons and spas. Greenville Technical College provides small classes and real-world experience, covering both the creative side and the business skills needed to help you become an industry leader. All instructors have been salon owners or managers, and they recognize that managerial and people skills are also important for your long-term success.

Students in this program are prepared to take the exam to earn a state license, but the training goes well beyond the basics. Classroom study and demonstrations along with practical work experience in our on-site public cosmetology clinic enable the graduate to feel comfortable on the job from the first day of work. Classes are designed in a consecutive semester format so that students meet the credit hour requirement for financial aid.

A career you can count on

  • A cosmetology background can lead to a career as a print or film stylist, in product development, as an educator, and many other possibilities that allow you to enjoy the rewards of a creative career.
  • Stylists can earn an excellent living, setting their own hours and choosing to work on their own or in salons, spas, resorts, and more.
  • Employment trends in Esthetics show that the number of day spas and specialty skin care businesses has continued to grow, and skin care is now a multi-billion dollar field.
  • Nail technicians provide manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions to clients, working at salons, spas, shops, and in their own businesses.

Information available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a good national overview of cosmetology professions.

What you’ll learn in the program

Students are fully prepared to take certification exams, but this program goes well beyond “teaching to the test.” You don’t just learn the fine art of hair, skin and nail care. You will also learn the business side of cosmetology such as

  • branding
  • marketing
  • effective customer communication
  • finance
  • creating a business plan
  • client retention
