The college that works for fire training here at home.Fireman in smoke

Once, you had to go to Columbia for fire service training. Now, Greenville Tech’s Brashier Campus in Simpsonville provides the training you need with a certificate in fire service technology and the only associate degree in fire science technology offered in South Carolina. Students with no previous experience and those wishing to advance in their firefighting careers have a convenient option right here at home.

Scheduling is easy with classes taught primarily in the evenings for the certificate courses. And with courses available online, firefighters can gain the knowledge and skills required for advancement and can avoid interference with work responsibilities.

A rewarding career
Firefighters perform essential services, and the rewards are great. The pay and benefits are a draw with a normal work schedule of 24 hours on duty/48 hours off and overtime pay. But the greatest benefit is the satisfaction of knowing you are helping someone in an emergency.

Fire siteSkills that meet high standards
Greenville Tech's program was implemented in 2006, at the request of the Fire Chief’s Association of Greenville County, which provided guidance on content. Courses offered encompass the specific training needs of the association as well as the national standards needed to pass the IFSAC exam.

These are curriculum (for college credit) courses, and credits may be transferred and applied to other programs. Completion of the associate degree prepares firefighters for advancement to officer positions as fire departments recognize the importance of higher education.

Program Curriculum

The Fire Science Technology program gives students the knowledge and skills needed to become a basic firefighter and takes students through National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter II level. It provides all the elements of NFPA Firefighter I and II including basic first aid, CPR, incident command, fire behavior and rescue. Upon successful completion, students may apply to sit for the IFSAC Firefighter I and II certification exam.

Fire drill exerciseThe associate degree program utilizes core courses from the National Fire Academy (NFA) Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Associate Degree recommended curriculum.
