Benson Campus Galleries

The Here Between There, paintings and drawings by Michael Marks, is on view in the Benson Campus Galleries beginning August 21. His works owe much to digital imagery in terms of a pixelated paint application and his employment of color charts and grids as carriers for his images. He combines figuration and abstraction. He records improbable and disjointed visual spaces. According to Marks,
"Like the physical and virtual environments we inhabit in everyday life, the paintings revel in both reality and illusion, and at times, question our expectations from each. At the core of my work is a fondness for the limits of representation and materiality. Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to allow viewers a variety of ways to enter these visual and mimetic experiences. The resulting works are documentations of the everyday, meditations on the history and materials of art, and haptic reflections not just from a painter, but on our roles as consumers and producers of images in the twenty-first century."

Though Marks' images may be unexpected and abstracted, his application of paint, graphite, and other chosen media is methodical and clean. His paintings and drawings appear to be meticulously planned and executed. Much of this planning results in images that provide visual punch lines. The Here Between There is a little like Alice's trip down the rabbit hole complete with humor. Marks' humor is not slapstick but begins with a slow wave of curiosity and then ending with a smiling 'aha' experience.

Michael Marks received his BA from Georgia College & State University and his MFA from Clemson University. Working across a range of materials and techniques, his creative work has been shown nationally and internationally in over seventy-five exhibitions. He has held academic appointments at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities and the University of South Carolina Upstate. Currently, Marks is an Associate Professor of Art and Foundations Program Coordinator at the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University.

The Benson Campus Galleries are operated by and for the faculty and students of the Department of Visual Arts at Greenville Technical College. The galleries are located at 2522 Locust Hill Road (Hwy 290) in Taylors, South Carolina.
