Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC-R)

HVAC/R systems do much more than keep us cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Virtually every home and business depends upon some form of essential heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, providing plenty of work for skilled technicians. Greenville Technical College’s HVAC-R program is well respected in the industry and is one of only two programs in the state accredited by HVAC Excellence, giving graduates the knowledge and skills to get hired and earn promotions.

Learn on real-world equipment

Greenville Technical College’s HVAC/R program provides practical experience utilizing real-world operating equipment: 

  • commercial refrigeration lab with display cases
  • R 22 and R 410A Heat Pumps 
  • two-stage high efficiency heat pumps and gas furnaces 
  • compressor rack like those used in grocery stores
  • high-tech control system in our Johnson Controls lab

Graduates will be ready for work installing and servicing of all types of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Job sites may include sports arenas, shopping malls, theaters, private homes, apartment complexes, offices, industrial plants, schools, factories, grocery stores, and hospitals.

What you’ll learn in the program

Our students learn

  • to install, service and maintain residential systems, industrial/commercial air conditioning systems, commercial refrigeration systems, and energy management systems
  • automatic controls systems
  • remote system monitoring

Graduates of Greenville Technical College’s HVAC/R programs are well prepared to test for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) technician certification and the Industry Competence Exam, with a high success rate on both exams.

Graduates may also earn certification for the 410A refrigerant being used in new residential and commercial air conditioning systems.

Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technology
Diploma in Applied Science
 

This program provides students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience needed to install and service all types of residential heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including heat pumps, gas, oil, and electric heating equipment, commercial/industrial air conditioning and commercial refrigeration systems.

Completion of this Diploma program prepares the student to continue their training for an Associate Degree in Applied Science, a level required by many companies.

Each student must take one of the following industry competency exams to complete this diploma:

  • Residential Air Conditioning & Heating
  • Light Commercial Air Conditioning & Heating
  • Commercial Refrigeration

Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technician
Certificate in Applied Science 

This program provides students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience to install and service air conditioning, heat pumps, gas, oil, electric heating equipment, and commercial refrigeration equipment.

This program trains the student as a beginning HVAC helper and/or mechanic, providing knowledge and experience in residential air conditioning and applications.
