Increased awareness of the impact sleep has on health has made polysomnography one of the fastest growing fields in health care. To become a registered sleep technologist through either the American Board of Sleep Medicine or Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists requires the A-STEP Introductory Course in addition to other pathway requirements (see AASMnet.org).
Successful completion of the A-Step Introductory Course will identify the participant as a Sleep Technician trainee. Most opportunities at this point will be found at smaller sleep labs. Most larger health systems require the Sleep Tech to be Registered in order to work in their sleep labs. See AASMnet.org for more information on educational/work-hour/testing requirements for certified verses registered techs.
