Greenville Technical College is participating in Hunger and Homelessness Week with a series of events this week. Hunger and Homelessness Week is sponsored each year the week before Thanksgiving by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness.
Recent statistics indicate that one in five students will experience hunger and/or homelessness at some point while in college. Events are meant to raise awareness, bring light to social issues that may be difficult to discuss, and create a safe environment for dialogue and solution finding.
On Monday, November 13 at 6 pm., a documentary – Homeless in the South – will be held in the University Transfer Auditorium, (building 104), on the college’s Barton Campus. A Q&A will be held following the viewing with producer Jeff Akers.
A food sculptures art show will be held November 16-21 in the library at the Technical Resource Center, building 102, on the Barton Campus. This exhibition is open to the public. As the college collects essentials for its food pantry, the sculptures are a way for clubs and organizations to build excitement and increase food donations. The public is invited to view these and to vote on a winning sculpture.
On Thursday, November 16 from 6 to 7 p.m., a session will be held in the Student Center, (building 105), room 225, Barton Campus, on minimizing waste and saving money by making small changes in cooking practices. This event is open to the public.
