Greenville Technical College may confer honorary degrees to individuals who have distinguished and sustained records of enriching the world for our students and our community. The following outlines the procedures for the nomination, review, approval and awarding honorary degrees to those individuals who have evidenced outstanding achievements, service, leadership and influence within their profession or field of endeavor.
Area Commissioners, GTC Foundation Board of Directors, faculty, students, staff and administration of Greenville Technical College may submit nomination packages to the President for awarding honorary degrees as outlined through the Greenville Technical College Nomination Form for Selection of Honorary Degree Recipients. For consideration of awarding at the May Commencement Ceremony, nomination packages should be submitted no later than February 1 prior to the ceremony. For consideration of awarding at the December Commencement Ceremony, nomination packages should be submitted no later than September 1 prior to the ceremony.
The President will forward nomination packages to the co-chairs of the Honorary Degree Committee within one week of receipt.
The Honorary Degree Committee will be co-chaired by the Vice-President of Academic Affairs and the President of Faculty Senate who will appoint and convene the committee no later than September 15 (for December Commencement Ceremony nominations) and February 15 (for May Commencement Ceremonies). The Honorary Degree Committee will review the nomination packages in accordance with the college’s Awarding Honorary Degree Policy, 3-10, request additional supporting materials if needed and forward a written review and recommendation to the President no later than October 15 (for December Commencement Ceremony nominations) and March 15 (for May Commencement Ceremony nominations).
The President will consider the Honorary Degree Committee’s review and recommendation for each nomination and make a final determination as to whether the college will award an honorary degree to nominee.
If approved, the President will forward a letter of invitation to the honorary degree nominee and notify the Vice-President for Student Services no later than October 30 (for December Commencement Ceremony awards) and March 30 (for May Commencement Ceremony awards) for producing the degree and including the award in the ceremony program and script.
If not approved, the President will notify the nominating official.
The Vice-President for Student Services will direct the honorary degree nominee to the Commencement Committee chair and assure that all logistics are adequately communicated for conferring of the degree.
If approved and the honorary degree nominee cannot be present at the Commencement Ceremony, the college may award the honorary degree at a Commencement Ceremony within one year of approval.
