When can I take my field placement?

You will take your field placement during your last semester or your next-to-last semester.

When should I inform the field placement instructor of my intent to sign up for field placement?

You need to inform Tracie Raines, field placement instructor, one semester prior to taking your field placement. You can email her at Tracie.Raines@gvltec.edu.

Can I do my field placement wherever I want?

Students must complete their field placement with HUS approved agencies.

Where can I look for information about agencies?

Most agencies have websites that list their mission, the population with which they work, and much more helpful information.

Do I have to do my field placements in Greenville County?

No. You can do your field placement at an approved agency in other counties.

Am I guaranteed a field placement when I want to do one?

There is no guarantee that an agency will accept you. The agency will interview you and decide whether or not to accept you as an intern.

I’ve been arrested. Is that going to be a problem?

Positive background checks can be a problem. All students are required to give potential field placement agencies copies of their criminal background checks. Some agencies will not accept students with a criminal record.

What happens if I can’t find an agency that will accept me?

The instructor will work with you to identify potential agencies, but there is no guarantee that an agency will accept you. Students with positive background checks often find agencies that will work with them. However, in the end, you must complete a field placement in order to complete the degree.

How many hours do I spend in the agency?

Each field placement is a minimum of 125 hours.

Other than working at the agency, what else is required in the course itself?

You will complete weekly documentation of your activities and a summary of your hours worked, and you will write at least one paper. More information will be provided in the orientation.

How do I set up my work schedule with an agency?

You will coordinate your schedule with your agency supervisor.

Who keeps track of my hours?

You are responsible for keeping track of your hours and the agency supervisor will verify that you have completed your hours.

What happens if I don’t finish all my hours in the semester?

You may request an Incomplete for the semester as long as your work has been satisfactory with the agency and with the instructor. The agency must agree to your continued internship.

Can I get credit for work that I have already done in an agency?

Unfortunately, no.
