Transitional Studies courses prepare students who need to upgrade skills in English, math, reading or ESL before taking college-level courses. These courses provide an excellent foundation for students who are serious about their educational futures.
Transitional Studies courses are structured for students who score at or above the minimum entrance scores on the placement test, but below program entrance requirements. Transitional Studies students may be taking the course for the first time or may need refresher work after being out of school for an extended period of time.
Courses are offered in lecture, online and computer-based formats. To move into college-level courses, Transitional Studies coursework must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Students receive excellent instruction and support from instructors and are also encouraged to visit the Math Centers, Writing Centers and Test for Success for extra help.
Transitional Studies math courses are designed to teach and strengthen basic math and algebra skills. MAT 100 covers whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, signed numbers, workplace applications and one-step equations. MAT 105 includes a review of arithmetic skills, linear equations, graphing, system of two equations, polynomials, linear inequalities, radicals and rational exponents, and rational expressions.

For students comfortable with learning in a self-paced, computer-based classroom, emporium math classes offer the opportunity for students to move through more than one level of Transitional Studies mathematics in one semester. Emporium offerings are available for MAT 100 and 105.
Two courses, ENG 032 and ENG 100, cover English grammar and introductory writing. Students are taught using a variety of learning styles including computer-based tutorials. Emphasis is placed on composition, punctuation, and word usage. Classes are offered in lecture and online formats, with an emphasis on active learning and critical thinking.

Two Transitional Studies reading courses are taught in lecture format with an emphasis on active learning: RDG 032 and RDG 100. Reading emphasizes vocabulary development and general comprehension skills, giving students the skills to read more efficiently, accurately, rapidly and effectively.
Practice is given on synthesizing the elements of readings with common themes. A particular emphasis is placed on reading across disciplines. Special attention is given to note-taking and reflecting on expository texts to promote active reading in later college-level course textbooks. Course skills also include time management, note/test-taking, and listening skills.
