Carefully review the terms and conditions outlined below, by entering, the student artist understands and will comply with the Department of Visual Arts’ VAASE policies.
Online submissions and delivery of entries will be accepted beginning September 11. Submissions close at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 13. No online submissions or delivery of entries will be accepted after this time.
DO NOT wait until Thursday, October 12 to begin framing your 2D works!
Works completed within the last two years (2021-2023), while enrolled as a DVA student at Greenville Technical College, may be submitted. Works submitted for a previous VA Annual Student Exhibit or created while enrolled at another school will not be accepted.
Online entry submission is required to provide detailed information about each student work. This information is used to verify delivery of works, create exhibition labels, and to create the awards PowerPoint. Please make sure all information is correct when completing the online submission form. Print and attach completed entry form to the back of each corresponding physical work.
Each student may submit up to five works with a donation of $5 per work (total of $25 for five works). This entry donation can be paid by cash, check, or at paypal.me/Riverworks. Monies may be given to Gallery Assistant, Patrick Owens (301-250) or Gallery Director, Fleming Markel (301-246). Make checks payable to the Greenville Tech Foundation, for VA Student Show.
Entry funds are used to provide the costume gala and cash awards. Award amounts vary depending on fundraising, but typical amounts are $250 Best in Show, $100 1st Place, $75 2nd Place, and $50 3rd Place in each category.
An independent juror will choose the works included in the VA Annual Student Exhibit from among the entries. Submission of entries does not guarantee a student artist will be included in the exhibition. Students will be notified by email of their entry status.
Awards are also chosen by the juror. Award winners will be notified by email and all award winners must be present or represented at the awards ceremony. The juror may or may not give awards in every category. All award-winning works will remain in the possession of DVA at the close of the VAASE for the “Awards” exhibition to be shown at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts in the spring of 2024.
The 2023 VAASE juror is Freda (Gin-Wen) Sue. Freda earned an MFA in printmaking from SCAD Atlanta and teaches printmaking and drawing at USC Upstate. She has exhibited work across the U.S. and Asia, including Starfangled Press, Brevard, NC; Kai Lin Art, Atlanta, GA; Jan Kossen Contemporary Art Gallery, New York, NY; and National Tainan Living Art Center, Tainan, Taiwan. She is a member of the SC Upstate Contemporary Print Collective and the Taiwan Society of Printmaking.
Artwork must remain on display for the duration of the exhibit, unless withdrawn by the Gallery Director.
The Department of Visual Arts reserves the right to select, copy, duplicate, or reproduce student work for promotional purposes.
In pricing your works, please consider that 20% of the sale price is suggested as a donation to the Department of Visual Arts GTC Foundation account.
Please note that although the Department of Visual Arts will take every precaution to protect artwork, artwork is not insured. Greenville Technical College does not guarantee the safety of work while on display.

2D work must be framed with hanging wire installed. No acetate-covered artwork, poster frames, or clip frames will be accepted. Severely worn and scratched frames and Plexiglas are unacceptable. There are free frames in the finishing room (301-230). DVA also has a frame library and will lend frames on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please see Pat or Fleming for framing advice. We suggest you purchase mats cut to your specifications from Hobby Lobby or Michaels.
Paintings on stretched canvas or panel do not require a separate frame for entry, but must be wired and ready to hang
If 2D work is to be displayed nontraditionally, please provide installation instructions, necessary hardware, and check with Pat or Fleming before entry.
All 3D work requires installation instructions. All 3D work must be stable and be designed to sit or hang securely and safely.
